Why Prague

The City of a Hundred Spires

Prague is a political, cultural, and economic hub of Central Europe, with a rich history and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectures. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, most notably Charles IV (r. 1346-1378) and Rudolf II (r. 1575-1611).

The physical attractions and landmarks of Prague are many. Among the finest is the Charles Bridge (Karlův most), which stands astride the Vltava River. The winding course of the Vltava, with its succession of bridges and changing vistas, contrasts with the ever-present backdrop of the great castle of Hradčany (Prague Castle), which dominates the left-bank region of the city from behind massive walls set high on a hill. The narrow streets and little taverns and restaurants of the older quarters contrast with the broad sweep of Wenceslas Square and modern parks and housing developments, while the great 18th-century Baroque palaces have their own elegance and splendour.

My favorite places in Prague

Petrin hora

Petřin Hill

Peaceful Petřín centers on its namesake hillside park, where winding pathways and secluded gardens lead to the summit of Petřín hill and panoramic city views. A funicular climbs to the 19th-century Petřín Tower, which resembles France's Eiffel Tower. Close by, the Štefánik Observatory has an astronomy exhibition, while on the border of the park, Strahov Monastery houses an ornate library and a centuries-old brewery.

Adress:

Petřín, Strahov, 169 00 Prague 6

What is so special about this park

It's a beautiful city park that is the location of Petrin Tower and that offers hiking trails, spectacular and mesmerizing views over Prague

vysehrad

Vyšehrad

It was a royal castle, even the seat of a monarch for a short period of time. It became a city and later, a Baroque fortress the appearance of which it has retained to these days. At the end of the 1800s, Vyšehrad became a national symbol and the cemetery of the most famous Czechs.

Adress:

V Pevnosti 159/5b, 128 00 Praha 2-Vyšehrad

What is so special about it

There is beautiful walk through the large green park, that opens amazing views of Prague and the river from the fortress walls

Located on the grounds of the magnificent Waldstein Palace, this elegant 17th-century garden is designed in the baroque style with classical bronze statues and gurgling fountains.
